A journey through France

The first few days of early September in France took us up along the coastline through the beautiful Biarritz and Vieux-Boucau. The natural beaches and incredible surf lodge/campsites were calling out for us to stay just a little bit longer!! We made it to Bordeaux where we got a great welcome from Ariana and Clement. How fortunate to have been afforded two rest days with them! Day 37 saw us stop for some burgers before were very kindly shown around the city.

Our departure from Bordeaux took us inland through the Massif Central with its spectacular scenery plains and scenery. There was a slight hitch in Sarlat where Brendan didn’t arrive at the chateaux accommodation until one o’clock in the morning. As night fell, he found himself on the wrong path full of stones and a taxi rescue was necessary before he could get a good night’s sleep.

The first two weeks of September were a bit colder and more rain than we would have liked. Luckily, that all changed in Lyon with bright skies and a lovely temperature the following week.

Some of the biggest highlights in France were, without doubt, the towns of Cahors, La Chaise Dieu and Conques.

Conques is a former commune in southern France, in the Occitaine region.

The small villages have so much to offer as you can get around them easily and get a real taste of the place. Supermarkets, accommodation, parks are all within touching distance.

Nevertheless, when we do hit the big cities, those rest days are well worth the wait. Lyon was special. Situated between the Rhone and the River Saone, there was a real buzz about the place.

Over the last few days we have cycled through the vineyards and stately mansions of Burgundy, one of the main wine regions in France. You can smell the alcohol passing through the small villages along the way.

Recent days have seen us surpass the 2,500km mark. Not that we are counting or anything…! Today, Day 56, September 25th, Stage 43 we find ourselves in the small town of Gray and we are moving to Lure.

Not long now until we reach Germany and before you know it, we’ll be whizzing through Luxembourg. Our estimated arrival for Brussels and the Soutien Belge HQ in Brussels is October 10th!!!
